Coco Mademoiselle

Wednesday night's ELLE screening of Coco Avant Chanel was exactly the right mix of playful nostalgia and serious style that coloured Mademoiselle Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's life. I got there just in time for the movie, after running from The Street, and when I saw the guests with popcorn in one hand, champagne in the other, I knew we were going to be administered a little dose of glamour!

The film itself was great, with some intense and beautiful moments. I loved the scenes where Coco's amour, Boy, took her to the coast. I also liked the image of her lying under a tree whose wintered leaves are blanketed on the ground, representing the death of a relationship she thought she knew, but had not quite understood. Beautiful!

The film reinforces how important Mademoiselle was to fashion. She was so forward-thinking that her style is still modern today. References to Breton tees, androgyny, tweed and monochrome are expressions of style we still look to. I must also commend Mr. Lagerfeld, who I have always thought creates clothes that are true to Chanel's aesthetic but maintain a modern edge. He is genius when it comes to Chanel.

The film is a fashion gem. Now I need more fashionable films! When is The September Issue being released over here?

Pictures of the South African ladies' take on Chanel dressing, after the jump. Enjoy & stay fabulous!

ps. I wonder if Coco knew that her outfit of pyjamas and heels would influence Dolce & Gabbana decades later?

pps. That Boy (actor Alessandro Nivola) is a much welcome sexy addition to the silver screen. I hope to see more of him!

The perfect occasion for my Chanel to come out to play.
